Why MLB's looming 2025 season will be transformative: A homeless team and big money deals

Fri, 2024-02-16 03:55

Rob Manfred, now in his final term as commissioner, addressed the issues that face the league heading into the 2024 MLB season.

Rob Manfred anticipates 'a great year' for MLB. It's what happens next that's unresolved.

Fri, 2024-02-16 03:55

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred touched down at spring training on Thursday, sharing a short flight with team executives and meeting the media. The chasm dividing the modern consumer and the manner in which MLB consistently generates some $11 billion in annual revenue — largely through multi-billion dollar national and local TV contracts — is nearing the point of rupture. Decades of passive cable TV revenue from cable subscribers that easily passed from ESPN and Fox's coffers on to MLB is about to hit a detour — in the form of a streaming alliance forged between the two network behemoths, their respective sports cable channels and Warner Bros. — all national rightsholders. Manfred himself hopes to launch a direct-to-consumer in-market streaming product for an estimated 14 teams that would both stanch the revenue bleed from teams ravaged by the Diamond Sports bankruptcy while also nudging baseball closer to modern consumption — although whether such a product would generate sufficient revenue remains in question.

Manfred expects A's to play in new Las Vegas stadium starting in 2028

Thu, 2024-02-15 20:35

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is confident the Oakland Athletics will be playing in Las Vegas starting in 2028. “The reality of the situation is that whenever you're leaving a market where you've been for decades and you're going to make a move to a different city where there's not a stadium, that's a really difficult undertaking, and it's not going to be seamless, smooth,” Manfred said Thursday. The team reached an agreement with Bally's and Gaming & Leisure Properties to build a stadium on the Tropicana hotel site along the Las Vegas Strip, and the Nevada Legislature approved $380 million in public financing last June for a $1.5 billion stadium that the team wants completed for the 2028 season. MLB owners unanimously approved the move in November.

Oakland Ballers baseball team announces $1.6 million investment into Raimondi Park to play home games

Thu, 2024-02-15 08:48

The Oakland Ballers independent league baseball team announced Thursday a $1.6 million investment into historic Raimondi Park in West Oakland as its home field for the team's inaugural 2024 season. In a press statement, the Ballers - also known as the B's - said the plan would upgrade the park's field for professional-level baseball with seating for 2,500 spectators and transform the park and its surroundings into a premier venue for Oakland youth baseball and softball. The investment comes from private funding, the team said. Raimondi Park was originally opened in 1910 as Bayview Park and renamed in 1947 in honor of Ernie Raimondi, a McClymonds High School graduate who played for the minor league Oakland Oaks baseball club before he was killed in World War II. The park was the training grounds for baseball legends Curt Flood, Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson, each who also attended McClymonds High.
