A's, Giants to square off in final Bay Bridge series this weekend
The San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's will square off in one final Bay Bridge series this weekend. The name Bay Bridge series was first coined in 1989, when the two storied franchises, that are separated by just the Bay Bridge and a stretch of I-880, met in the 1989 World Series. Game three of the World Series became deeply woven into the history of the Bay Area. A 6.9 earthquake shook San Francisco before the first pitch was thrown.
Giants, Athletics both on the rise ahead of two-game set
The San Francisco Giants' hopes of improving their standing in the National League wild-card race will have to come at the expense of their local rivals when the Oakland Athletics host a two-game series starting Saturday afternoon. The Giants, just 49-55 on the morning of July 26 and a potential seller at the trade deadline, took advantage of a bubble in their schedule to go 12-4 in a stretch of 16 straight games against teams with losing records. The Giants did manage to win the series finale, and now hope to ride that momentum against two more below-.500 teams -- the A's and Chicago White Sox -- before embarking on a rugged slate the rest of the season.
Las Vegas official says city 'rounding third' in getting A's stadium construction approved
Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said he was optimistic three key documents needed to begin construction on a new stadium for the Athletics would be approved Dec. 5. “We're rounding third and heading for home,” Hill said after Thursday's Las Vegas Stadium Authority board meeting. The three documents that need to be approved for the planned $1.5 billion, 33,000-seat domed stadium on the Las Vegas Strip are the lease, non-relocation and development agreements.
