Baseball pioneer: Oakland's expansion team signs female pitcher Kelsie Whitmore

Thu, 2024-04-11 13:00

Kelsie Whitmore's list of “firsts” just got a little longer. The Southern California native was the first woman to play in the Atlantic League and the Pacific League. Now she will be the first woman to sign a contract with a Pioneer League team as the Oakland Ballers announced on Wednesday that they were adding the trailblazing pitcher after a successful tryout last weekend. While Whitmore's ultimate goal is to become an immediate impact player for the Ballers, she is also hoping her journey inspires more women to play baseball.

Thu, 2024-04-11 10:55

Cody Bradford struck out seven in another strong start, Adolis García had a two-run single among three hits and the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Wednesday night, stopping a three-game losing streak. Shea Langeliers struck out twice and grounded out against Bradford, his old college batterymate 100 miles south of the home of the Rangers at Baylor, and finished 0 for 4 a night after becoming the first A's starting catcher in 99 years with a three-homer game. Bradford attended high school not far from Globe Life Field, as did Langeliers, who extended his arms after getting called out on strikes in the third and had a conversation with umpire Ramon De Jesus as Texas catcher Jonah Heim walked away.

Athletics' Sacramento plan is filled with fan conflict: 'Unthinkable'

Thu, 2024-04-11 04:30

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Craig Merry is a massive baseball fan. With two young sons, one would think the Sacramento native would be ecstatic at the prospect of the Athletics setting up shop just a few miles away from his home in the city's suburbs. But after decades of stadium drama, a bevy of concerns about franchise ownership and a looming move to Las Vegas, Merry is one of many Sacramento baseball fans with reservations about supporting the A's as they head to California's capital city. 5 The A's will call Sutter Health Park home in 2025. “The notion of supporting the A's as the local team under these circumstances is unthinkable,” Merry said. “The way this situation has unfolded is an affront

A's left-hander JP Sears (0-1, 8.68 ERA) and Rangers righty Jon Gray (0-0, 6.14) are scheduled to get the ball when a surprisingly competitive series between last year's champion and losingest club continues. Sears was bombed for five runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Cleveland Guardians when the A's were opening the season with three straight home losses, including a 12-3 defeat in the 28-year-old's start.

Report: Could Sacramento keep A's if Las Vegas move stalls?

Wed, 2024-04-10 13:17

The Athletics plan to play the next three MLB seasons at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento before moving into a proposed Las Vegas ballpark in 2028. ESPN's Tim Keown spoke to several sources close to the negotiations involving the A's, the city of Oakland and Sacramento officials, and one source believes the team remaining in the state capitol if the Las Vegas deal hits a snag was part of the motivation for Kings owner Vivek Ranadive allowing the MLB franchise to use the Triple-A ballpark rent free.

Why I feel worse about Detroit Tigers' playoff hopes despite 7-4 record

Wed, 2024-04-10 06:19

For those of you who followed along throughout spring training, you know I was optimistic about the Detroit Tigers' chances to be better than advertised. It was a cautious optimism, but it was optimism all the same. If you would have told me back then that the Tigers would win seven of their first 11 games, I would have been thrilled. In 43 innings of work, Tigers relievers have allowed just seven earned runs while striking out 44 batters and pitching to a 1.05 WHIP, .172 opponent average, and 1.47 ERA.

Oakland B's hustle to get new Raimondi Park stadium ready before first game

Wed, 2024-04-10 06:15

The grassy baseball field at Raimondi Park sat muddied and soggy at many points during the winter's rainy season, but it already looks a lot different. The remaining dirt was being shoveled by a diligent group of tractor drivers who are looking to have the diamond ready within the next two months to host professional baseball games. Come the first week of June, the Oakland Ballers — better-known as the B's, in a sly nod to the soon-departing A's –– hope to greet fans with a site worthy of their attendance. The independent, minor-league baseball franchise plans to keep the spirit of baseball alive with a team of eager young players in a city that's increasingly starved of professional sports, and at a park named for a late former ballplayer raised in Oakland.
